I know I posted a different Quote of the Day earlier but maybe this should be Unfortunate Metaphor of the Day.
Clara Gutteridge of charity Reprieve appeared on BBC News with this reaction to Sir John Scarlett's denial that MI6 was complicit in the torture of terror suspects:
"Every single allegation of torture we have had has been dragged kicking and screaming from the Government over the past five years". [My italics]
Speaking of MI6, in the fascinating BBC Radio 4 prog today on the history of the service, Sir John mentioned in passing a portrait that adorns a wall of his office at Thames House.
The portrait is of John Thurloe, former spymaster under Oliver Cromwell and a man of fearsome reputation.
