Six of the best... weekend money savers
Stuck for something to do this weekend? Here are six ideas to check out.
1. Get some cheap art
For art lovers who missed last weekend's Affordable Art Fair don't worry you can still get hold of top-rated art that, as art goes, is extraordinarily good value.
Check out London Art. Every fortnight the magazine selects a 'recommended "investors' choice"' from 15,000 artists. But you have to be quick.
Recent investors' choice Sara Huxley-Edwards - a particular favourite of mine - who won the accolade for her piece 'Champagne' (pictured) and whose work was on show at the Affordable Art Fair, is selling out fast.
Remember if you're new to the art world and are not sure what to buy... buy something you like! The chances are someone else will also like it if you come to sell it in the future.
2. Two for one Disney DVDs
If £1,000 for artwork is way out of your league, Play.com has two Disney DVDs for the price of one, or 2 for £14 including delivery.
3. £5 rail tickets
If you're fed up with hatefully expensive prices of British railway tickets. The Trainline.com is offering tickets for a fiver if you help test a new feature on its website.
4. Hotel rooms for £39 inc breakfast
Another special offer from Holiday Inn Express. You need to use this link>>
5. Book a day trip to Jersey for £79
For the slightly more adventurous, fly from Bournemouth and enjoy breakfast a tour and more from this great little airline on the south coast. Book now for Feb travel>>
6. The older you are, the cheaper your new glasses they are...
Oh, but only if you're heading to France between now and the end of the month.
French optical store Grand Optical, which has a well-stocked branch at the Cite de L'Europe shopping complex in Calais, has an unusual special offer: you get your age as a percentage off a new pair of glasses.
Great if you're into designer frames as they tend to be a lot cheaper than in the UK.
If you're 20 years old you get 20% off, if you're 60 you get 60% off and so on. (Free to all 100 year olds). The discount is on the frames only and although the lenses are slightly dearer than the UK because they insist as part of the offer that you have the pointless hard-wearing coating, they will fix them up within the hour. And get this... as part of the deal you get a second pair thrown in for 1euro. Or prescription sunglasses for 21 euros.
So, if you're off on an early Christmas booze cruise - take your prescription with you. Staff speak English.
